XL Built were privileged to undertake this exciting second storey addition project for a young family in the Melbourne suburb of Forest Hill. The project saw us build an entirely new second storey atop of the existing home, while also overseeing some minor ground floor renovations.
Our expert extension team were involved in every facet of this project, looking after the design, permits and construction. The entire project lasted 10 months, with the design and permit approval process taking around five months and construction lasting another five months.
Our clients were a young family with two young children who were in desperate need of additional living space. They were also looking for more space to accommodate family visiting from overseas.
In terms of design, our clients were looking for something simple yet modern, with a couple of eclectic design features that would elevate more functional spaces such as the brand-new, second-storey bathroom.
Our clients remained in their home throughout construction, which meant that our team had to be conscious of their privacy while building the new structure. It also meant that we had to create a construction schedule that wouldn’t interrupt with their day-to-day life.
The project was also conceptualised and completed during the government’s HomeBuilder grant, and we were required to work quickly to ensure the project was delivered before the program ended.
One of the most exciting features we built for this home was a brand-new bathroom. The room includes an incredible half-moon mirror, “kit-kat” mosaic tiles, a timber vanity and frosted windows. The bathroom also features a spacious double vanity, which means there will be no fighting for space before work or school!
For the kids’ bedrooms, we kept things simple and spacious, as our clients wanted the rooms to remain versatile and functional as the children grew up. This meant installing twist pile carpet and opting for simple and sleek white walls.
Our clients also wanted the kids to have a play space for themselves, so we crafted a rumpus room to house a few comfy couches and a TV. Again, this space is versatile, meaning it can be used as a study space, reading room or home gym as the kids grow up.
Another striking feature of this addition project is the stunning timber staircase that connects the two levels. We used a simple blonde timber to create this set of stairs, with a hallway wall forming one side and a timber handrail on the other. We also integrated LED lights for safety.
