Project Feature: Coburg Second-Storey Extension

One of our favourite types of projects here at XL Built is a second storey extension and renovation of an older home. It’s so fulfilling to see a modest house totally transformed into a modern marvel, that is perfectly suited to the unique lifestyles of our clients.

There are so many reasons to choose a second storey extension. Not only will you be able to create a more spacious home, without cutting into precious outdoor space, you’ll be able to avoid real estate, stamp duty and conveyancing fees by remaining on your much-loved block. While you may have to move out for a short while, it’s often possible to conduct the renovation and extension while you are living at home, meaning even more savings.

Our most recently completed project – a renovation and extension in the up-and-coming suburb Coburg – was no different.

The Brief

The original dwelling was a classic, one-storey white weatherboard home, which had plenty of potential. Issues with the existing house were mostly to do with space, age and the floorplan.

Our clients were looking for a more spacious and modern home, which would better accommodate the needs of their growing family. This meant crafting an entirely new second-storey and renovating the existing space downstairs, while retaining the charming classic style of the original home.

The Project

Downstairs, we hammered through an existing wall separating the kitchen and living area, in order to create a more welcoming and contemporary open-plan space. We also ripped up the existing floorboards and installed brand new, polished timber floorboards that give the entire area a chic and seamless look and feel.

We built an entirely new kitchen in the existing downstairs space, with fresh white kitchen cabinetry, industrial style chrome tapware and a stunning metal range. We also installed a butler’s pantry fitted with extensive shelving and storage, so our clients have extra space for entertaining, cooking, baking and clean up.

Upstairs in the new second-storey extension, our clients wanted to create a softer feel, so we opted for plush navy carpet up the winding staircase and into the bedrooms. This new space was all about comfort and functionality, creating practically-sized bedrooms with simple built-in wardrobes hidden by swinging doors. Built-in robes are the perfect way to keep clutter and mess at bay, especially in smaller kids’ bedrooms.

We also crafted two new wet areas upstairs – a powder room and full bathroom. These spaces feature sparkling white tiles and modern fixtures, which our clients selected for a refined, yet modern look and feel.

The new extension also features a brand-new office and study space, which features with an entirely custom built-in desk attached to the wall. Working from home and achieving an optimal work-life balance is now a breeze for these Melbourne clients.
